Mga Makabagong Laruan

“Sawsaw suka mahuli taya”

Bida Pilipinas 1st Edition (Shamcey Supsup and Pinoy Support)

In honoring the best of the Philippines, it’s locations, people, food and anything Pinoy, this will be the space to showcase what Filipinos can offer to the world. And on its 1st edition  Bida Pilipinas features the recent feat of the Philippines in the recent Miss Universe pageant.

After weeks of preparations and excitement from the spectators, the new Miss Universe was crowned earlier this morning (Sep 13,2011 Manila time). On it’s 60th edition held in Sau Paolo Brazil. The judges gave their nod to Leila Lopes to become Angola’s first Miss Universe in history, while making Philippines bet Shamcey Supsup the 3rd Runner-up.

During the coronation night, Shamcey was really favored to win, getting 2nd spot on the fan votes for the swimsuit and evening gown competitions. During the Q&A portion when Shamcey was asked by American actress Viveca Fox if she will change religious belief to marry the person she loves, she answered “If I had to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love because the first person that I love is God who created me and I have my faith and my principles and this is what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God too.” On that moment many people (specially pinoys) expected her to get the crown because on that segment she also topped the fan votes, vesting other final 5 finalist.

Then came the announcement of winners, China was annouced 4th Runner-up, then Philippines was next called as the 3rd Runner-up, followed by Brazil and Ukraine as 2nd and 1st Runner-ups respectively and Angola getting the title.

With that announcement many got disappointed as Shamcey had the nicest answers among them. And even without getting the title she should be placed on a higher spot. Talks on the Twitter and Facebook are also centered in disappointments over the results, some even joked on what judge Lea Salonga should have asked Leila so that she didn’t get the crown. But after all, it’s a contest one is really bound to win over the others. And as what Shamcey herself also said, she has already accepted and she was happy with the result so let’s all accept it also.

What’s nice about this whole story is the fact that we really see how Filipinos can be united behind a fellow Filipino competing with other countries. That for a couple of hours we set aside differences and get united in rallying behind a countrymen representing the name of our country and wearing our country’s colors. May it be in sports when Pacquiao is fighting inside the ring, The Azkals battling it out on the fields, Efren “Bata” Reyes striking on the billiards table and The Phillipine Dragot Boat Team paddling on the foreign seas, our clock suddenly stops just to watch and cheer for our “Kababayans”, and that’s what’s good about us Filipinos.

I just hope that this unity that we show during competitions and pageants will not just be for a couple of hours or even for a day, why shouldn’t we do it everyday? And if that happens I believe we can achieve the progress and development that we longed wanted.

So to every Filipino who brings pride to our country THANK YOU, you makes us prouder Pinoys. And for this current event, thank you Shamcey you brought delight to our country.

World Trade Center 9/11/01 attack memorial photo

World Trace Center Twin towers on Fire.Photo from Flickr by Cyril Attias

Today, the world, specially the United States, commemorate a dark day in their history. It was a decade ago when the famous Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York fell down as 2 hijacked commercial planes crashed on it.

I was in 3rd year college then, and as a regular viewer of news programs, I regularly surf channels when I know news shows are on. It was in NBN Channel 4 that I first knew about the incident. NBN4 have a tie-up then with Fox News so every primetime evening they are showing Fox News Programs.

At first I thought it was a simple case of a burning building being shown on TV, but moments later when a plane flying around the world trade center building suddenly crashed on the other tower, changed my view of the things. On that very moment the seemingly simple news turned out to be a world history breaking in front of my eyes. Different local news programs also picked up that incident and confirmed that indeed it was terror attack. It was also reported that other series of attacks have occurred in other parts of the US. One in the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia and the other in Pennsylvania which was supposed to be heading towards The White house or The Capitol Compound.

Who would have known that a country such as United States, known for its power would be trespassed by terrorists. With its highly skilled intelligence agencies and the ‘superpower’ country that they are, it was really unexpected to see such event.

Days later US most wanted terrorist Osama Bin Laden admitted via a video recording that he was the one responsible for attacks. Due to that then US President George W. Bush launched its War on Terror program aimed at capturing Bin Laden and giving justice to the 2 thousand lives taken by that act of terrorism.

Now after 10 years what does it changed? What lessons have been brought about by this massive terror actions? The US may have already killed the main perpetrator (as Bin Laden is already dead), but are they now safer from another threat of terror attack?

This 9/11 incident is not only about the US and their war against terror. Every human being who are advocating a peaceful living here on this world are all part of this scenario. We may not be Americans but we are all humans. We Filipinos are also poised with this imminent threat of terror specially that links to the Al-Qaeda terror group are traced in Mindanao. And we have also experienced many incidents involving terrorist groups in the country and they’re still continuing to terrorize.

I think what we should learn from this is to be vigilant. To look after the welfare of each other. To cease everyday as our last because the rage of terror will always be there waiting for another opportunity. Terrorism is not only about Osama Bin Laden. Yes he may have died, but his group is still alive and anytime they can attack again. The quest for peace doesn’t end by merely killing the mastermind, but killing the root of it’s existence. Because it doesn’t matter how many terror leaders are killed if the core still exist, terrorism will continue.

The Bangkok Feel

These photos were captured during my trip last June 2010 in a city very akin to Philippine ambiance. Almost the same structures, almost the same settings and almost the same looks of people.

Prior to the trip, the city was under state of emergency due to political turmoil. But upon arrival no traces of past trouble remained. As how they marketed it to the world, Amazing Thailand is really magnificent. Through these pictures I hope you could also feel what I have felt.

Huling Pisi

And The Winner Is (Globe TATT Awards Night)

The Road to TATT Awards
My TATT Awards experience was an unexpected one. Although I am really hoping to be part of the event to witness first hand the fate of my bets, it seemed impossible at first how can I be there since there’s no “available way” at all.

Then came a blog contest by the TATT Awards organizers. They will choose 10 best blogs written about the TATT Awards and the favorite finalists, with the lucky winners getting 2 passes for the awards night. Since I already have a blog about it here, I immediately submitted my post and wish the luck would rain on it.

Since I’m not expecting a win, I didn’t focus on waiting for the announcement of the invite winners. Instead I focus on campaigning for my favorite finalists, so I continue tweeting and inviting Twitter and Facebook friends to vote for them. On the announcement day (in fact I lost track that it’s that day already) I was thrilled to see TATT Awards mentioning winners of the passes. At that moment, I prayed I will be mentioned as one of the lucky people to be invited, so I stayed on their twitter page waiting for my twitter name to appear. After 8 mentions, still no hope of an invite for me, so I said to myself “Ok maybe next time” so I continue with the work I am doing. Since Tweetdeck is a permanent resident on my desktop, I couldn’t help but look at it and try to see my mention column again, and to my surprise I saw this @rojan88 Congrats for winning passes for 2 to the #TattAwards.See you 6pm at the Rigodon Ballroom of the Manila Pen this Friday!”. That really made my night and the rest was history.

The Event
After winning the invites, I’m still unsure if I will attend the event cause it was Friday and I have work. But after some encouraging words from my twitter pals, I got convinced and decided to push through.

Together with one of my twitter friends @angeltulod we head over to Manila Peninsula and enter the Rigodon Hall. We were welcomed by a photo-op at the entrance and iced tea on the cocktail area. When we arrived we didn’t expected that a few people will be there cause it’s about past 7pm already and the event was slated to start at 7pm. Most of the finalists and the TATT council were still not present as they were caught by the heavy Makati traffic (timing to Friday gimicks and payday).

As we waited for the show to start we just enjoyed seeing different faces and different lights, while indulging our drinks and picture taking. It was former ABS-CBN news head Maria Ressa that we first had a picture with. Being “THE” Maria Ressa that she is, we never expected her to be that accommodating. She was very nice and very down to earth, and that made me idolize her more.

After almost an hour, the program begun. Hosted by the gorgeous Divine Lee with Tim Yap, the event was ushered in by the performances of Giniling Festival and Youtube sensation Arjhon Gilbert followed by an opening speech from Tattoo brand executive Dong Ronquillo, then a keynote speech by TATT council member Maria Ressa. Maria never failed to amaze me with the way she speaks. She really talks from the heart and with conviction.

The awards were handed out afterwards with occasional performances from the Indie Rocker finalists in between. First to be given was the Wordslayer to The Professional Heckler himself Loi Reyes Landicho. Then the Video Slinger to Mikey Bustos followed by #ThoughtMover given to Bianca Gonzales (who appeared on a video recording accepting her award). The Artise to Jin Joson next The Advocate to Elizabeth Angsioco, the Indie Rocker to Up Dharma Down and Stylisimo to Laureen Uy. For the Ballbreaker award, the crowd gone loud with the cheer for Maria Ressa’s blooper when she accidentally announced the winner Lea Salonga instead of mentioning the finalists first which led Tim Yap to tease Maria as a spoiler. After that the Tech Junkie was awarded to Mark Macanas then the Final and most coveted The One which went to the Filipino Freethinkers.

The show was ended by the performance of another Youtube sensation Maria Aragon.

The Real Winner
Being part of the event was really an experience. It was really a night of greatness for the social media, having honored the best people who revolutionizes social networking in the country. And being there as part of that social media history is more than a trophy for me.

I may not be a finalist that night, but meeting personally and taking pictures with people I admire on twitter was more than enough. The people I thought I could only interact through social media but I shook hands and talked with that night is indeed a dream realized.

It was a realization also that indeed social media can bring people closer specially those who have common goals and advocacies. It also proved that social media and networking sites are not only for social purposes but also to push for agendas and advocacies that will improve the lives of fellow citizens.

A night with Maria Ressa, Beth Angsioco, Tonyo Cruz, Loi Landicho and Divine Lee, I can say the BIGGEST WINNER that night was ME.
