Mark Barriga win big, fuels Philippines hope for an Olympic Medal

Philippines’ hope for an Olympic medal is still alive as Mark Anthony Barriga won over his Italian opponent Manuel Cappai in the 1st round of boxing in the London Olympics 2012.

The 19 year old Barriga, who is the lone boxer in the Philippine contingent for this year’s Olympic games, defeated Cappai with the score of 17-7 in the light flyweight event. With this win he secured a slot in the next round of boxing with is the Round of 16.

The young Pinoy boxer genuinely outclassed the Italian, evident by knocking him down in the 1st round. Although he’s smaller than his opponent he used excellent footwork and hand speed to beat the taller Cappai. All 3 rounds of the fight were all dominated by Barriga as the Judges scored 5-2 in the 1st, 4-2 in the 2nd and 8-3 in the 3rd.

Filipinos all over the celebrated his big win. Several congratulatory greetings floods social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. His name “Mark Barriga” even became one of the top 10 trending topics in the Philippines and Worldwide which means many Pinoys are really following the games in London.

Mark Anthony Barriga’s next assignment is to win against his opponent in the Round of 16. He will be facing Kazakhstan’s Birzhan Zhakypov on Saturday August 4. Let’s continue to support and pray for Barriga’s win in the next round, he’s one of our hope for an Olympic medal.
