Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle now a Cardinal

Manila Archibishop Luis Antonio Tagle is now part of Vatican’s College of Cardinals as Pope Benedict XVI announced his appointment as one of the 6 new Cardinals of the Catholic Church.

In a surprise announcement, the 85 year old Pope said a consistory of Cardinals will be held on November 24 to officially elevate the new Cardinals. Tagle’s appointment made him the 7th Cardinal of the country following, Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Jaime Cardinal Sin (deceased), Jose Cardinal Sanchez (deceased), Julio Cardinal Rosales (deceased), and Rufino Cardinal Santos (deceased).

The College of Cardinals is task to elect the next Pope in a conclave. And having Tagle there can or will also make him a possible candidate for the highest position on the hierarchy of the Catholic Church.

Tagle who is 55 years old, is currently the chairman of CBCP’s Commission on Doctrine of the Faith.

The 5 others who were also elected to the position of Cardinals were American Archbishop James Michael Harvey, the head of the Pontifical Household, Beatitude Bechara Boutros Rai, patriarch of the Maronite Catholic Church in Lebanon, Archbishop John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan of Nigeria, Baselios Cleemis Thottunka,l major archbishop of the Syro-Malankara rite in India and Archbishop Ruben Salazar Gomez of Bogota Colombia.
