In an effort to regain its former position in Asian basketball, Philippine Basketball Team, Gilas Pilipinas proved we can climb again to the top after beating Saudi Arabia in today’s game at the Mall of Asia Arena for the 27th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship.
The Philippine squad led by its team captain Jimmy Alapag fought hard to get the win as the Saudi team seemed determine to score an upset in Gilas’ 1st game. It was a close game marked by several lead changes for both teams. Saudi ended the 1st quarter up by 2 points at 16-14. But from the start of the 2nd quarter Gilas up their tempo and delivered more goals to take back the leads. Philippines ended the 2nd quarter with a 7-point advantage over Saudi at 35-28. Third quarter was also taken by Team Gilas, although there are efforts from the Saudi team to catch-up and take down the lead. Third quarter ended at 57-46 Philippines us by 11.
And in the 4th, Gilas made all efforts to protect the lead and it paved of as they win the game 78-66. L.A Tenorio and Larry Fonacier led the Gilas in scoring with 12 points each. In an interview, Gilas Head Coach Chot Reyes said they were happy with the victory but he is expecting the real battle in their next game tomorrow.
Team Gilas will be battling with the Jordan team tomorrow (Aug 2, 2013) 8:30PM again in MOA Arena.
