Gilas Pilipinas led by Jason Castro escapes the mighty Iran to walk away with the win 87-73. Castro scored 26 points to fuel Gilas’ win over Haddadi’s Iran.

Boosting Castro’s fire in the game are Andrei Blatche who baskets 18 points with seven rebounds despite the ankle injury he got from their game against Japan, Terrence Romeo with his 15 points and Calvin Abueva who accumulated 13 points in the game.

On the other hand, Iran was led by Khahbahrami’s 21 point, Mashayekhi and Kamrani with 11 and Haddadi’s 10 points.

With this win against Iran, Philippines now captured the top spot in the Group E with 3-1 win loss record. This also pushed Gilas to have a sure slot at the quarterfinals of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.

Gilas’ win was bouyed by their good performance on the second half of the game. With Iran’s 10-point lead in the early minutes of the third quarter, Andre Blatche and Jason Castro joined forces to make a 9-0 run to ease the Iran’s lead to 1. Terrence Romeo on the other hand shared back to back triples to take the lead in the latter part of the 3rd.

But it was Abueva’s quick hands that made it worst for Iran. His defensive skills and several great steals from Iran’s superstar Haddadi made the game in favor of Gilas. He was also responsible for fouling Haddadi out of the Game, which helps the Philippine team go smooth for the rest of the quarters.

Gilas Pilipinas’ victory marked Iran’s first loss in the 2015 FIBA Asia tournament, and their first biggest loss with 14-point margin.

Gilas will face India next on Tuesday September 29, 2015 as their final game for Group E’s second round.
