It’s not yet time for the Philippine Basketball Team to go back to the Olympics.
Gilas Pilipinas is unsuccessful to get a ticket to Rio 2016 after host country China wins the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship finals 78-67.
In the finals game held Saturday October 3, 2015, Gilas Pilipinas was unable to defeat China and settled for the silver medal. Gilas who initially lead China 5-0 at the onset of the game, was left trailing after China released their fury.
China controlled the game from the 1st quarter up to the last, not allowing Gilas to have a chance to close-in. While Gilas tried many times to cut down the lead courtesy of Andray Blatche and Terrence Romeo, the game continued to favor the Chinese team as they were able to find answers to Gilas’ offense.
Although there were blatant lapses from the referees, Gilas had a really bad time in the basket with several misses in the free throws and in the 3-point area allowing China to dictate the game and maintain if not further the lead. Dondon Hontiveros’ saving 3-points in the game against Japan was nowhere to be found and Jason Castro’s great offense was also missing as he only contributes 8 points in the game. Andray Blatche again lead Gilas with his 17 points and 5 rebounds. Abueva and Romeo followed with their 9 points and 5 rebounds each.
China on the other hand was lead by Guo’s 9 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists with help from Zhou and Yi who contributed 16 and 11 points respectively.
In the stats department, while Gilas beats China in the 2FG, 41.5% – 37.5%, China win the 3FG, 37.5% – 25%. China also gets the free-throws department 63.6% – 57.7%.
With China’s win they are now heading to the Rio Olympics in 2016 while Gilas will have to wait for the next FIBA Asia Championship to get a chance to go back to the Olympic basketball event.
Well fought Gilas, the silver medal finish is more that the gold medal China had.
