Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte again said he is not running for president in the coming 2016 elections.
In a letter addressed to his friends and fellow Dabawenyos, the hard hitting Mayor says sorry for disappointing his supporters who are calling on him to join the presidential race in 2016. He reiterated he has no ambition to aspire for the Presidency and that the country doesn’t need him or his leadership.
While he appreciate those who believe that it could be his destiny to be the next President of the Philippines, Duterte regretted his real destiny is “end his years and years of public life in the service of Davao City and every Dabawenyo”.
While he finally ended the call for his presidential bid, Duterte noted he might end up running Mayor again before retiring.
“If Indat Sara agrees to run for Mayor, I will retire at the end of my term in 2016. If she does not, the option to be Mayor again is on the table” said Mayor Rody.
Before coming up with this latest statement, Mayor Duterte already announced in a press conference last September 7 that he’s not running for President.
But his advisers and persistent supporters were on high spirit and optimistic he will still change his mind on the last minute. Thus thousands of his supporters gathered in Quirino Grandstand in Luneta last September 26 to ask the Mayor to finally give in to their wish of him joining the presidential derby. While Duterte in a message to his supporters at Luneta didn’t give any categorical answer to their clamor, the Mayor asked more time to reflect before he decide.
Last Saturday October 10, his political adviser Lito Banyo also issued a statement that Duterte has already decided to run for President in 2016 and just deciding on what date the announcement will be made.
But now, with this latest statement straight from the Mayor himself, it’s not wrong to conclude that the Mayor has finally shutdown any calls and encouragement for him to try the national election specifically gunning for the presidency.
