In a book signing event Tuesday October 13, 2015, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago declared her intention to run for President in 2016.

Senator Santiago was in Glorietta Tuesday for a meet and greet and book signing event for her book “Stupid is Forevermore” when she said she will run for President in the coming 2016 Philippine elections.

In a statement the Iron Lady of Asia said, should she become the next president, the Philippines will be a much better country.

“If I become president some time in the very near future, this country will be much better than it was before. Today, this country suffers from the malaise of plunder. Plunder is when you look at a person and the person looks at you [and it] feel[s] like eating each other up. It’s like cancer,” said Sen. Miriam

Miriam already hinted last week about her plans for the coming 2016 elections when she posted a photo with the caption “I am not going to be coy. Society leaders have urged me to seek the presidency. I can rise to the occasion”.

Meanwhile, Netizentiments on Twitter are so high regarding the news of Miriam joining the presidential race.

The hashtag #Miram2016 climbed to the number 2 spot of the Twitter Philippines trends with people tweeting and rejoicing about her decision.

Many are saying they have renewed hope since Duterte has already backed out of the race, Miriam gave them the reason to vote again.

While many are jubilant in Miriam’s announcement, the question now is who will be her Vice Presidential candidate. Sen. Miriam when asked, didn’t give any name but said her Vice President has already declared his/her Vice Presidential bid. Speculations are high that it could be Bong-Bong Marcos or Alan Cayetano. But many netizens are pushing for a Miriam-Duterte tandem.

We’ll just see in the coming days who will be her running mate.
