Miss Universe Philippines 2016 Maxine Medina is now open to the possibility of getting the aid of an interpreter during the Miss Universe 2016 Finals.
After being bashed in social media for her purported poor English skills, the Philippines bet to the Miss Universe 2016 said she is open to getting the service of an interpreter during the coronation night on January 30, 2017 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News Maxine said she wants to win and if winning means her having an interpreter then why not
“I’m here to win. Kung kailangan ko ng translator, kukuha ako,” she said.
Maxine has been on the receiving end of harsh criticisms from fellow Filipinos for according to them is her lack of good English skills.
Meanwhile, The Philippines’ first Miss Universe, Gloria Diaz has also suggested Maxine to get an interpreter. Diaz who won the country’s first Miss Universe crown in 1969 said Maxine should get an interpreter if she feels she can express herself freely using our native language.
In an interview with PTV news, the Miss Universe 1969 said she will encourage Maxine to get an interpreter if she knew she could better express her thoughts using our vernacular language. Diaz also pointed out that using one’s native language will not make her less of a beauty queen.
“She is a Filipina and I don’t think it will make her less of a beauty queen if she will decide to use our language on the grand coronation,” said Gloria Diaz.
Current Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach also said it’s ok to get an interpreter. In an interview with Dianne Castillejo, Wurtzbach said while she for herself don’t favor using an interpreted because it eats up the allocated time, getting the aid of an interpreter is an option during the coronation night. She also advised Maxine to go with what she’s comfortable with.
