After winning big in his first fight against the Italian Manuel Cappai and after fueling Filipinos hope for an Olympic medal, lone Filipino Boxer in the on-going London Olympics 2012 Mark Anthony Barriga finally finishes his Olympic journey.
Fighting in the Round of 16 against Kazakhstan’s Birzhan Zhakypov, Barriga wasn’t successful to get the ticket to the Quarterfinals. With 2 warnings given to Barriga in the 3rd round, 2 points was added to the Kazakh boxer that gave him the 1 point edge over our Pinoy Boxer. Total score after 3 rounds was 16-17 in favor of Zhakypov.
Philippines’ hope for an Olympic medal is still alive as Mark Anthony Barriga won over his Italian opponent Manuel Cappai in the 1st round of boxing in the London Olympics 2012.
The 19 year old Barriga, who is the lone boxer in the Philippine contingent for this year’s Olympic games, defeated Cappai with the score of 17-7 in the light flyweight event. With this win he secured a slot in the next round of boxing with is the Round of 16.
After the arrival of BMX rider Daniel Caluag in London, the 11-man Philippine Team for this year’s London Olympics has now been completed. Aside from Caluag, other athletes that composed the Philippine Team are Jasmine Paler Alkhaldi and Jessie Khing Lacuna for swimming, Mark Anthony Barriga for Boxing, Rene Herrera and Marestella Torres for Athletics, Tomohiko Hoshina for Judo, Paul Brian Rosario for Skeet Shooting, Hidilyn Diaz for Weightlifting, Rachelle Anne Cabral and Mark Javier for Archery.
